Beautiful Photography Ralph. I got to see birds I have never seen before and hopefully will remember them in case I see them again. I can only hope to capture some nice photos on my birding trips. Thanks for sharing.

Ralph, someone sent me your pic of the warbler fallout - amazing!! What a delight for you. I then browsed some of your photos - I must say they are some of the most wonderful bird photos I have ever seen. I will come back to the site when I have more time to browse some more.

Wonderful galleries you have here Ralph. I notice there aren't any images with the 5D/ 300mm combo you were carrying. I'd like to see some images you captured with that rig! Looking forward already to another trip to the island next summer.

Thoroughly enjoyed your work. My husband and I were suppose to travel to the island with members of the Capital Area Camarea club but on the morning of the trek communications were not clear and we were told the trek was off due to weather- so we did not make it this year but have tiackets for next summer. One can only imagine the sights, sounds, smells, changing of the seasons you must experience while on the island. As John Muir states," All the wide world is beautiful and it matters but little where we go...the spot where we chance to be always seems best."

Nice to run across your photos Ralph. We met briefly at Letite when I was lightkeeping on Gannet. Enjoyed my 4 shifts on Machias back in the early 90s. I got out of lightkeeping after spending 4 years out on the BC lights, until 1997.

Oh my goodness, I'm in love with the puffins, too! They look like penguins that are dressed for a performance. I must go there and see them for myself. Glorious portraits, Ralph.

You may see a collection of Hawaii lighthouse photos at:http://www.pbase.com/selvin/hawaii_lighthouses
Aloha and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your comment. I love your pictures. Taking lighthouse pictures is a lot of fun. You get to places that other people normally wouldn't visit. The trip through France was great, even though the weather wasn't ideal for photography. Germany will probably be next. And perhaps next summer the rest of France. There are over a 100 in France. Best wishes for the new year!

Hi Ralph,
Thanks for posting the clarifications and corrections in my bird gallery. I've updated the titles and captions accordingly. It really helps when folks post corrections of that nature. Thanks for taking the time to browse the gallery and commenting as appropriate!

Hi, Ralph -

Thank you for your generous comments on my hawk pictures. It's a small world; I am currently in Fort McMurray but spent the first 40 years of my life in Saint John, NB. I had just recently been investigating puffin watching tours for an upcoming trip home. You are very fortunate to live in such a great place surrounded by those unique birds.
Sue 02-May-2006 15:33
I love your pics, Ralph. Keem em coming!

I agree with Carl....let's see a pic of the lighthouse keeper.

What amazing photos Ralph! Have you got one of you? I would like to see what a REAL lighthouse keeper looks like.
RALPH ELDRIDGE19-Apr-2006 02:09
I am one of trhe lightkeepers on the island and I am just now making the transition from 35mm to digital.
The Terns, both Arctic And Common, experienced a total breeding failure, with no chicks surviving at all in 2005, after a poor year in 2004.
golfpic19-Apr-2006 00:20
Hey, nice to see a gallery from someone on the island. Do you work in the lighthouse? I'm wondering how the Artic Tern fared over the Summer because when I visited, I had heard many of the young (or eggs) had not made it. Someone also mentioned (must have been one of the tour operators) the possibility of establishing a second colony of Puffins nearby but first must establish a tern population.

Thank you for the great site. Wonderful pictures of the Machias Seal Island. Would love to see one of those sunrise/sunsets! Visiting the Island is and always will be one of my favorite trips. The Island, the ocean, the many birds (oh those puffin!) and the fact that we were out in the middle of the water with nothing else around but mother nature. Of course the welcome we received when we docked on the Island was excellent. Ralph made us feel welcome, he is sooooo well aquainted with the Island and I want to possess his knowledge of nature! Keep up the good work and keep on keeping us informed. Love it!
