Message from Nancy Clendaniel
Clendaniel has spent over 50 years shooting theatrical, travel & p.r. photography. Assignments have taken her to Great Britain, Russia & throughout America. Clients include: Amtrak, American Red Cross, Bank of America, Microsoft & the U.S. Dept. of Labor.
Nancy got her start in photography by photographing Sonny & Cher at The Philadelphia Convention Center, on November 4, 1965. From there, she began shooting stills for Long Wharf Theatre's 'Young People's Theatre' and 'Theatre in the Park' in New Haven, CT. In 1977, Nancy moved to Chicago to work as House Photographer for the St. Nicholas Theatre, with David Mamet as playwright in residence. Soon after, she accepted the job of Staff photographer for John Davidson's Singer's Summer Camp (JDSSC) on Catalina Island (Summer 1978). Thanks to a contract gig as Editor for State Farm Insurance in Philadelphia, Nancy began studying with her first mentor, photojournalist extraordinaire, Phil Douglis. For the next ten years, Nancy trained privately with Phil at his home office in Swarthmore, PA, and attended his award-winning workshops "Communicating with Pictures."
In 1980, Nancy moved to Hollywood to take the job as the House photographer for the Beverly Theatre, in Beverly Hills. She also met and studied w photographer Betty Bennett's, sharpening her skills as a photojournalist, and becoming a Master B&W Printer. Betty, a former Time/Life Photographer, House photographer for Theatre of the Living Arts, and Dick Clark, was instrumental in introducing Nancy to the LA Photographic community. During this decade, Nancy became the house photographer for The Beverly Theatre (in Beverly Hills) and personal photographer for Wolfman Jack, in addition to working on projects with legendary artists including B. B. King, Ray Charles, The Manhattan Transfer, Willie Dixon, John Mayall, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper & Tina Turner.
From 1987-2000, Nancy served as the Director of Women In Photography International, the nonprofit that promotes the visibility of women photographers and their work.
In 2009, Nancy's image "Little Slugger" was one of the winners of the Fresh M.I.L.K Competition, juried by Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt. Her image, along with the other winners, appears in the coffee table book "Friendship, Family, Love & Laughter" published by PQ Blackwell Ltd, of New Zealand.
In January, 2013, Nancy published her first book "Private Moments in Sacred Space" - a collection of celebrity photos taken onstage, backstage, in a studio, in a garden, in a gallery, at The Grammy Awards, at an art museum, a closed rehearsal or at The Beverly Hills Hotel. In February 2014, Nancy's photography is featured in "Guitar with Wings" the photographic memoir of Grammy Award-winning artist, Laurence Juber. From his roots as a noted London session player, his three-year stint with Paul McCartney's "Wings" (as lead guitarist), to his solo career as an innovative finger style guitar composer and performer, this book documents his musical odyssey. www.GuitarWithWings.com
After working in Hollywood and London for many years, Nancy relocated to Seattle after the birth of her son in 1989. Along with on-going photographic assignments, she is actively involved in the marketing & digital preservation of her work,"The Clendaniel Collection." Nancy's photographs have been exhibited and published worldwide. A selection of her work is now available through the online agency www.FineArtAmerica.com. Most recently her image: "Princess Margaret Arriving at the Royal Ballet" (1981) was selected as part of The Black & White Collection, presented at The Exposure Award Gallery, at The Louvre, in Paris (June 2015).
Nancy's 3rd book "The JDSSC Experience" (Oct. 2019) was created to honor entertainer John Davidson & all who participated in his great effort on Catalina Island (Summer 1978-79). "John Davidson's Singers' Summer Camp" is considered the prototype for programs like "American Idol." As part of the history of Catalina Island, Nancy's photo archives from JDSSC have been gifted to The Catalina Island Museum for preservation.
