I can still kick my bud for not finding this incredible site earlier!!!
Being reminded of Takashi Amano's work, you also ad a huge diversity in other setups like Tanganyika etc....

Thanks for the inspiration with your first class aquarium art work!

Hallo Oliver,

Welche Fische hättest du dort ins Becken gesetzt.

Hallo,

Vielen Dank

Mr. Knott,
Could there be any benefit to starting up a planted aquarium with just the substrate, beneficial bacteria inoculation, the filter and water, letting it cycle for 2 weeks to reduce ammonia and nitrites, then 2 weeks later draining the water low to make it easy to plant the tank, fill it back up and add immediately algae eating fish and shrimp? Could this perhaps prevent algae at startup or is it more work than helpful?

Kind Regards,
Brett Wildermuth

I never do this in this way, it is to complicated in my eyes. For me the most important making every 3 days after set up a waterchange of 30% (the first 3-4 weeks). This push up the biology and helps a lot.

Best wishes,

Oliver Knott

how long the nature soil last without losing its shape?

The main shape will be stabil, there are only some few percent the year (2-3%) you have natural abrasion.

Hello Oliver
Claudio I have purchased from Anubias rocks that you used for the preparations of aquariums to 'INTERZOO in 2010.
I wanted to find out whether input or limestone?
If they raise the value of KH?

best regards from italy Claudio Ferla
claudio.ferla @ gmail.com

If you use stone which contents a little bit calcium (like limestones) it is possible that they raise a little bit the KH. Especially when you use CO2. But it is a good puffer effect when you use NatureSoil.

Best wishes,

Oliver

Just today I've remade my 300 liter's tank. Thank you so much 4 your tip about filling ! I've covered the ground with newspapers and plastic film as well: water remains really clear, and bottom firm... It's a really simple and smart method, Thank you!
PS: only some Hemianthus C. went to float, how do you fix them, deeply?
ALBERTO

When you plant the HC please try to plant the plant with about 2-3cm roots so this keeps the HC down.

Best wishes,

Oliver

Substrat heater are not bad if you have one. Depends on the plants you use it is not necessary to have one, but some plants growing much better with a substrate heater. Try it.

Hi Oliver,

Is there any chance to see all or some of your innovative design on Youtube ?
Do you have any special formula for amount of light required for a tank ? Thnks.

On Youtube, not yet, maybe in the future.
I dont have a special formula because of the light. I choose my plants when i know what kind of lightning i have over the tank. There must be 2 or 3 different kind of formulas, for plant which need low, medium and higher lightning. I my opinion.

Hallo Oliver.

Of course your layouts give me lots of hints for my design of my own aquarium.
I'd like to visit here often and to learn more about layout skills.

Hallo Oliver,

Was dann die tägliche Dosis ergibt.

Hallo Oliver, erst mal riesengrossen Respekt.

Hello ,Oliver to consider your work is fabulos.
I"wish many years end you have healthy in a future
I"wish few questions.
1. Ada Aqua Soil is a long time is available that ,substrat laterite + gravel or sand ?
2. Ada aqua soil is available in dutch aquarium ,or aquarium dense planting?
3.If my setting a new aquarium you recomand 100% Ada Aqua soil amazonia
Now use gravel end laterite from dupla I" am satisfactory from my substrate but you consider if Ada Aqua soil is more good that laterite or Dennerle depoint mix or Tropica soil
thanks

Olivier,
I love your aquascape! You are truly a master at this. I am starting my first tank and need some help on choosing lighting and fertilizer (dosing). Can you please provide some guidelines for me on a 55 gal planted tank? What is another good foreground plant like the Hirsuta?

Hey Oliver,

I was looking through some of your tanks and was really impressed with the growth and formation of each and one of your tanks. I know you've probably heard this countless times, but I really mean it!

I was wondering if you could help me out on how to grow my plants healthier, faster, and more beautiful. If you could, I would appreciate that so much!

How to keep plants sucessful it is very difficult to decribe...I only can show you my pictures that you can see how it can works and that have a examples how you can set up a layout. If you have questions please try to take part at one of the different internet forums, like one of the best: www.aquaticplantcentral.com

Hy Oliver ! Could you tell me please , in your opinion which size of gravel is the ideal for the plants and what are you doing when the temperature is too high (over 30 degrees ),in the summer ?

I think gravel with a size about 2-3mm was good for the most plants. Try to keep the temperature under 28 degrees for long time. In the summer about it is possible to keep the plant with 30-32 degress but not more than 1-2 weeks...after this time you have to cool the water till 28.

Hello Oliver, I have been a long time admirer of your aquascaping skills. I have been growing aquarium plants since I was eleven, and am now running a sucessful aquatic plant nursery that we are in the process of expanding. We have been offering aquarium plants online for over four years now. Our idea was to improve the quality of the aquarium plants being sold in the United States, as well as educating the hobbiest and especially the beginner in the "how to" of growing aquarium plants as well as the art of aquascaping. I would like to ask your permission to show your skills on our site, with due credits of course. For references I would refer you to Aquarium Design Group's Jeff S. Our site is www.freshwateraquariumplants.com. I feel that your photos would inspire many beginners to pursue aquascaping, not just planting. I never get tired of looking at your work, it is truly wonderful. Best Regards, Don Matakis

Thank you Don...and I wish you many many sucess for the US market. You have a big potential in your country...and with the Senske-Brothers one of the best aquarium designer in the world.

Hello Oliver!! I´m writting from Brazil and congratulations for you job man!! I wish I could do something like this someday. Listen, I´ve some question that I´d really appreciatte if you could answer it. When you use hemianthus callitrichoides on your tanks, which kind of lightning you use?? And how many watts per litre?? Do you add any fertilizer??

Hemianthus callitrichoides don`t need so much light...I use it with T8 and T5, but also with metal halide. I don`t care about watts per litre so I cant say you how much, but you can see I many of my tank I grow it with less light. Important was to add enough iron in the water, because the plant take the moste fertilzer over the water, and not over the ground.

Best regards to Brasil, Oliver Knott

Hope you answer it!! And we´re waiting for you here in Brazil to teach us some of your techniques!! Best regards...

i have read in some places that Metal halide lighting is essential for tanks deeper than 24 inches but in many of your tanks you are using T5 tube to great effect.

It depends what kind of plants you want to grow...for example Cryptos and Microsorum don`t need so much light, also in very high tanks. Choose the right plants and you can use T5 lamps.

Hello Oliver

I've been coming to your website for some time now, and I must say, that I am very impressed with your work.

I've been trying to get Hemianthus Callitrichoides "Cuba" to grow in my own tank, but I can't seem to get it plantet right. I've been looking at your pictures, but I can't figure out if you leave some of the "wool" with the plant roots in it, when you put it into the substrate, or if you clean all the "wool" off, and just put a "lump" of the plant into the substrate. Could you please explain how you do it?

Thanks in advance.

Beautiful! Very nice selection and very interesting backgrounds and themes.
Great plant growth and algae control. Apart from C0 2 what foods dop you reccomend for plants. Understanding the fish are not fed and only small fish are normally used.
Very nice Altum angels though mine seem to want to eat everything.

I feed my plants with very different fertilizer...if it's possible I use daily fertilizer. If you have to much fish in the aquarium or use very substantial food you get more problem with to high nutrient content so you have to dose your fetilizer carefully, especialy the nitrogen parts. With a decent fish population you have more control about you water parameters.

I have been out of the hobby for several years now and I am wondering what substrate you would recommend. What do you think of Dupla's Laterite & fertilizer products? Thanks for your time. Chris, USA

I use Dupla many years ago. In this time it was one of the best products for planted aquariums. If you have the chance to use it, make it, it works. I prefer ADA substrate, when I have the chance to use it.

Your tanks are very impressive.
I have been out of the hobby for several years now and I am wondering what substrate you would recommend. What do you think of Dupla's Laterite & fertilizer products? Thanks for your time.

If you could drop me a mail, that would be great!
Thanks and keep it all going!

Hallo Oliver,

DANKE MFG Mike

Mr. Oliver Knott,

I am Aykut and from Turkey. I am a 24 year old-physically disabled person. Since I began to primary school, I have been interested in aquariums especially fresh water aquariums. Now I have got two tanks. I have kept a lot of fish. My plan is to set up a planted Discus aquarium to one of them that its dimension is 100((L) x 60(H) x 45(W) cm. In other tank (65x35x25cm) there are Malawi Cichlids.

First I met you while I was searching a subject that is planted aquariums on the internet. I feel that you are really good at planted aquariums. I decided what plants I can use in my tank. However I have not found some of plants that I am thinking. They are listed below:
1) Anubias barteri ''coffeeafolia''
2) Cryptocoryne blassi
3) Echinodorus tenellus
4) Echinodorus quadricostatus
5) Echinodorus latifolius

I will be the happiest person of the world, if you help me how I can get them. Have you got any recommendations before I set up my tank? I am looking forward your reply.

I have just discovered your site and I spent hours looking at your fantastic aquascapes.

Hallo Oliver,

Hy Edward,

sorry for the late reply but I'am too busy at the moment.

Do you have a standard formula you use for fertilising your aquariums TMG/Hagen etc for micros and then add macro's seperately??
I don't have a standart formula for dose the fertilizer. It depends how the plants look and it was more a "feeling" dose. If I have add macro I dose it seperately. But mostly in the "high" lightning tank.

Do you use reverse osmosis water??
Yes very often. We have mostly very hard water in our region. I try to get a mix water (tabe/osmosis) with a KH about 4-6

In your opinion are heater cables required.
I have very good experience with cable heater, especially with plants like Echinodorus and Cryptos.

What is your preferred substrate.
For me personaly the best substrate are the AQUASOIL from ADA. Never saw a better and more healthy grow like in this soil. But also for me not ever available.

Do you use the "Barr" EI method for water changes.
Sorry I don't know the "Barr" EI method. Maybe you can tell me more about it.

thank you for your praise. Yes I know Luis and his amazing tanks he made. He have really a green thump for aquatic plants. Do you know you can get Tropica plants also in Mexico, there are some few retailers how sell the plants. I wish you many luck and sucess with your planted tanks.

Cheega,

because of the toolkits there are only some twezzers you can get from other company (like JBL, Dennerle...) who are in a similar quality. But especially the scissors from ADA are very special and make the work in the aquarium much more easier. Also the quality is very good from all the ADA toolkits.

Wonderful job indeed with the aquascaping! I am very impressed.

A question though, if you don't mind to answer...
I was wondering why you hardly use any polysterine backdrops (with the fake stones or rough textures)?

Personally, I do think they help make the tank a lot better. But your opinion on this would be very much appreciated, thanks!

About the new Utricularia, actually I don´t have much experience yet, since I have got one small bunch only two weeks ago - But it is really beautifull, and outside the gravel you can observe the typical "utriculus" around the base of he leaves. Hope I can tell you more a little later!

Hy Jordan,

I get the most plants directly from Tropica in Denmark. But for the people in the USA it was not possible at the moment because of the law. But for example at the auction in Washington AGA this year they sell many rare plants. I think this way was the best to get this kind of stem plants in the USA. Maybe you can buy Tropica plants in the future in the USA, I hope it for all the American Aquarium hobbiests.

I have a question about the 560liter tank you have. The one with all the cuba plants. I came across the plants on tropica and decided I loved them. I cannot find these anywhere in the United States. I bought everything I needed to keep these plants and cannot aquire them. Aquaplant.com has none. I have for lighting an ARO 220 ballast that runs two 110watt VHO bulbs with VHO endcaps. These bulbs are Trichromatic 6500k bulbs. I then have 2 6500k 40watt bulbs. These are all mounted in my canopy over a 75 gallon (285liter) tank giving me 300watts total of 6500k light.

Anyways, I want to know if you could help me going about finding these plants or where you get yours from. I also would love to see a plant arrangement photo. Like a pic telling where everything is located as I have trouble identifying some plants and want to know what is where. I would really apreciate any help if its not a hassle and thank you in advance.

Following your updates with pleasure!
I too have "nature" aquariums.

But please tell me the reason for this (ADA traning day's 2) :
"when the light is switch off the CO² goes out and a airpump start automaticaly over the special time switch sytem."

What is the advantage of this?

Keep up the good work!

Oliver Knott the aqua creator29-Sep-2004 18:29
Hy Adi,

I think the JBL tubes are ok, I prefer the daylight tubes with a Kelvin about 6.500 but if haven't this I choose mostly the JBL's.

It is not easy to grow fast growing plant's together with low light plant's like Microsorum or Anubias. You must play a little bit with the light time I think 6-8 hour in the first time is ok, raise it after 3-4 weeks to a 8-10 and maximum to 11-12 hour. But this depends on the growing of you plants. Especially Gloosostigma and Rotala walichii need many light to grow very healthy.

I also prefer to switch of the CO² by Night and by day on.

Good experience I have with follow water parameters:
PH 6.80
KH 3-5
Nitrat: 8-10mg/l
Iron: about 0,1 mg/l

Good for fast growing plants: NPK fertilizer from Hagen
Good for Iron: E15 from Dennerle

Make your own experience, the most important for me are the water change. At the first 3 weeks every 3 day 30% after this every week 30%. And a sensible fish quantity.

Best regards,

Oliver

I trim the Riccia ball's inside the tank. The cutting material you can catch easy a the surface of the water with a net.

You must trim the Riccia weekly at the side if you don't want that they over grow the Hemianthus.

Adi 24-Sep-2004 10:08
Hallo Oliver!

Your work is really amaizing. I admire all your tanks, especially the Cuba tank. I am planing to set my new aquarium with 4x T5 tubes (2x JBL ULTRA SOLAR NATUR and 2x JBL ULTRA SOLAR TROPIC) I did not manage to get OSRAM lights, so I am asking if this kind of lights will be good for 385l aquarium with only 50 cm of height (140x55x50). The plants I will use will be Glossostigma, Microsorum pteropus (Narrow and Windelow), Anubias barteri var. nana, Eleocharis accicularis, Vesicularia Dubyana, Riccia fluitans, Monosolenium tenerum (Pellia), and for background Rotala sp. Green, Rotala nanjenshan, Rotala walichii and Rotala rotundifolia.

For first two/three weeks i thought leaving lights switched on for about 6-8 hours, and use of CO2 (3bubbles per second) with spiral diffuser. I also have EHEIM Thermofilter 2 2128 and substrate rich with Fe and other elements (JBL Florapol, Plantrit Flumon,... about 2 cm of height (enough?)) Should I turn on CO2 one hour before the lights, and turn them off one hour after the lights go down? After the cycling method will be finished I will slowly add fishes, shrimps,... Should I also get some fast growing stem plants or no need? How about fertilisers? Are you familiar with Seachem products? One more thing, should I start dosing with K, N, Fe, P,... shortly after first week or is it better to start immediately with small concentrations?

Thanks for your answer
Best regards

Adi from Slovenia

hi oliver. do u trim the riccia "balls" outside the water or inside the tank? how do u keep the riccia out of the h. callitrichoides?
Oliver Knott the aqua creator10-Sep-2004 14:26
Hy Tamara,

thank you very much...this was not Pistia yor are right...a mistake from me...natural this was Salvinia (natans) :-)

The emers growing from Hemianthus callitrichoides in this tank was only a pure chance.
In this tank I never put in any Hemi.calli., I think I bring in a small layer from Hemianthus with the swimming plants. And unnoticed the plant grow under the lighting cover.

I think the light is enough, it is good.

Because of the algae try the snails: Neritina natalensis.

The reflector are made by a small company in Germany. Also good reflectors you can get from BRESSLEIN Germany.

hi again oliver, thanks for the fast reply. i have a 100*50*50 tank with 4*39w t5 + 30w aquarelle+30w grolux. do u think its more then i need? i have good growth and hardly no algea but small dots on the front glass.
could u b more specific about the reflectors?
Oliver Knott the aqua creator25-Aug-2004 16:09
No that's not a mistake. In my experience you don't care about the high (tall) of the tank, if you a have a good lightning system. For example at this tank: The lamps (T5) lying quite near a the surface. At the lamps a installed a special kind of reflector, very very effective against the normal reflector you can buy at the shops. The T5 tubes from Osram daylight (Kelvin 6.500) are also very good.

Hy Tamara,

thanks very much and many greetings to all your Russian aquarium friends.

The big tanks at the ADA Aquarium Gallery are made with "White-Glass" and the glass thickness was 15mm. This was very important, you need very strong glass.

Hy Edwin,

very nice picture you make. Thanks very much !

I remember many tanks I help to set up at my visit in March. This is the first time I see the tanks after my visit, very interesting to see how they be shaping. Nice :-)

How was the trip and did you meet some of the ADA staff ?

The pictures r very inspiring.
Seeing there is ADA training, i was wondering if it is open to the public,
I am from Malaysia.
Apparently ADA products r not seen here.
I actually planning to plant a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft, I am looking for a few nice design i like.
But most of the pictures do not have the similar size, is there a reason why.

Thanks

Hy Tamara,

very nice, your greetings from the Urkraine. Thanks.

Yes I take part a the Layout Contest 2004, but I don't think I get a good place because I'am not satisfied with the picture of the tank. I try to make a special tank for the Contest in 2005.

Your second question about the color of the plants: Thats not easy to descripe. Many light and CO². The right ground for the plant. And playing sometimes a little bit with the different fertiliezer. Good experience for get the color at red plants I have with the Hagen NPK, the Brighty Special Lights and ECA from ADA (Amano).

Oliver Knott

Hallo Julia,

Oliver Knott

Hallo Oliver!

Klasse Aquarien, habe schon alle in Suttgart angeschaut.

Julia

Thank´s for ansuwer my questions!

Coul´d you tell me the discripcion of the thanq - Showtank 160cm x 60cm x 60cm?

have a great year of 2004!!

Hy Rudi,

thank you for your message.

I love the low tech tanks too. Not so much light and very easy to take care. Unfortunately our water is to hard that I need even CO². Not so much but I need some.
When you have the right water condition you can grow this plant very good without CO².
The Bolbitis grow very well under water when you cut all the emers leaves, after few weeks new fresh underwater leaves grow out of the rhizom. Very good too, looks the Vesicularia spec. "Christmas Moos"...it comes from your region I think.

Best regards,
Oliver Knott

Hy Pedro,

thanks for your praise.

I try to answer your questions:

What sistem of Co2 you use or prefer?
I work with very different kinds of CO² sytems. In a good price and quality range are the sytems from JBL.

I have black algae in my anubias, and I don´t know how to erradicat-it!
In my experience the anubias grow better (without algae) under low light, in the corner of the tanks or under the stem plants in the shadow. Directly under the light you have more problems with this kind of algae, when the water conditions are not 100% optimal.

I see a mesage that you tel to change 20% of whater, is that enougth?
I change 20% of the water every week, sometimes more.

I have 1w of T5 per liter, in a thanq of 120L, do I need Co2?(I have only anubias and ricia -Tropica Flowars)
When you want to grow Riccia I think you need CO² absolutely. But it is dependent of you water conditions (hardness for example). You need much more luck when you not use CO².

Do I ned fertilizacion every day? my text tell-me that I have 0,4 ppm of Iron!!
I prefer a daily fertilizer. The plant need other trace elements too. Important Potassium in think.

Much greetings to Portugal,

Oliver Knott

Mach bitte weiter so !

Hi Anne,

I use the EOS 300D since 2 weeks and I need much more exprience with this camera. Before this I use the Kodak DX 3900 very easy using and good results (3.1 megapixel).

Greetings Oliver Knott
Anne 26-Nov-2003 08:13
What camera do you use for taking aquapics? How did you like eos 300D?
Oliver Knott the aqua creator10-Nov-2003 19:45
Hi Tom,

when I have the choise I would take the T5 tubes.

The best results you get when you put the tubes above the surface (near the surface). And every 10cm one T5 tube. With this lightning the plants get a very regular light. The growing is more healthy with this lamps, also the color fidelity is much better than under HQI lamps.

I use in the T5 tanks mostly daily fertilizer and and enough CO² (PH 6.80 - 7.00). But very important is to using the right fast-growing plants. Especialy in the first weeks.
And a weekly waterchange (20%).

Best results with T5 - Osram Lumilux Daylight de Luxe

Best regards,
Oliver Knott
